Innosuisse welcomes Maria Anselmi as the new Head of Start-ups and Next-Generation Innovators Division. She succeeds Dominique Gruhl-Bégin on 1 February 2023 and thus complete the six-person Executive Committee.

Having been Innosuisse’s special coach since 2021, the start-up world holds no secrets for this native Italian. Maria Anselmi has spent her entire career in the business world and has managed various companies abroad, including in Slovenia and the United States.

Her knowledge of international development and her experience in digital and data strategy complement the expertise of the other members of Innosuisse’s management team. To learn more about this dynamic personality, we asked her two questions.

In the 1990s you created one of the first Italian and European payment sites. Where does this attraction to digital technology and its application come from?

Already in the early 1980s I appreciated the potential of technology to free and enhance human creativity. Back then I decided to develop the research project for my dissertation in Glottology by programming a relational database and “drawing” segments of ancient Oriental script in binary maps on the first green-screen Macintosh.

Between 1995 and 1996 with my unparalleled team of engineers we digitised the content of Sole 24ORE, inventing new data payment formats distributed over the Internet: that was what I call my digital baptism.

Right from the start I was fascinated by the possibility of organising data in a flexible way and using it to analyse, explore or predict social and business phenomena, in order to create new knowledge. I have devoted my entire career to this goal, adopting, experimenting and supporting the development of the most innovative technologies in this field.

What do you like most about working for Innosuisse?

It was more than ten years ago when, while working as a coach, my involvement in the development of start-ups and young entrepreneurs began. It is an activity I have never stopped being involved in and it has led me to follow all kinds of businesses all over the world, particularly in emerging countries. I fell in love with their innovative power, passion and talent.

This experience has left a profound mark on me as a leader, businesswoman and person. It has driven me to continually question how to do business, adopt new technologies, read the market as a global scenario and discover ways of releasing creative freedom and growing very young talent. Even in overly rigid corporate environments.

My son’s generation - Generation Z - believe they have inherited a worse world than their parents'. Working for Innosuisse gives me the opportunity to support innovation in an even more concrete way and to help the next generation, inventors, and talented professionals to participate actively in creating the world they would like to live in.
