Guarantee credit: Expert panel gives 122 assessments of start-ups

In April, the Federal Council decided to support promising start-ups with coronavirus-related liquidity bottlenecks via the guarantee system. In this way, in cooperation with the cantons, they should be protected from insolvency. The cantons were able to draw on a panel of experts coordinated by Innosuisse to assess the guarantee applications. By the submission deadline of 31 August, the panel had issued 122 assessments of start-ups.

The coronavirus pandemic has not only hit SMEs and large companies hard, but also many Swiss start-ups. This is why the Federal Council decided on 22 April 2020 to use the existing guarantee system to support start-ups as well. When assessing the guarantee applications, the competent authorities of the 21 participating cantons were able to call upon the services of an independent panel of experts, coordinated by Innosuisse and consisting of experts from 13 nationally oriented organisations in the Swiss start-up ecosystem (Business Angels Switzerland, Digital Switzerland, Gebert Rüf Foundation, Impact Hub, Innosuisse, Mass Challenge, SEF4KMU, SICTIC, Swiss Entrepreneurs Foundation, Swiss Startup Group, >>Venture>>, VentureLab (IFJ), W.A. de Vigier Foundation). "On behalf of Innosuisse, I would like to thank all organisations for their valuable contribution to the expert panel. It’s nice to see how quickly and easily the Swiss start-up ecosystem works together,” says Dominique Gruhl-Bégin, head of the Start-ups and Next-Generation Innovators Division at Innosuisse and coordinator of the expertpanel.

By the submission deadline of 31 August 2020, the expert panel had issued assessments for a total of 122 submitted applications. The panel evaluated the start-up companies according to the three defined criteria: scientific or technological basis, innovative character, scalable business model. According to information from SECO (link), 359 loans with a total volume of over 98.7 million Swiss francs have been granted so far to Swiss start-ups (as of: 9 December 2020).
