Numerous pre-proposals were submitted under the first call for projects of the Flagship Initiative

There is a large interest in the Flagship Initiative. Innosuisse launched this new programme in January with the aim of giving impetus to systemic innovations in view of Switzerland’s current economic and societal challenges. The first phase of the call for projects ended on 31 March. A total of 78 pre-proposals were submitted.

The first proposed thematic area, “Addressing the accelerating digital transformation brought about by COVID-19”, registered 43 applications. The second, “Improving resilience and sustainability, and reducing the vulnerability of society, infrastructure, and processes”, received 35 applications. Topics such as training, learning and education, decarbonisation and health were of particular interest (see illustration). In total, the requested Innosuisse funding amounted to around CHF 280 million.

The second phase of the call is underway. The members of the Innosuisse Innovation Council have evaluated the pre-proposals and recommended 33 consortia to submit a proposal. The submission deadline is on 13 August. The Flagships selected at the end of this second phase will start their work towards the end of 2021 or at the beginning of 2022.
